About the show
A historic Warm Wind Theatre production inspired by Krishna’s childhood, remembered for its mixed puppet techniques, vivid characters, and themes of courage, transformation, and the triumph of good.
The Little Cowherd Gopal and King Kamsa is an important production from the early history of Warm Wind Theatre. Created over two decades ago, it is presented here as part of the theatre’s artistic archive and is not currently available for booking.
The performance combined several theatrical techniques, including tabletop articulated puppets, large-scale puppets, and theatrical masks.
At the heart of the story was the childhood of Krishna in a small Indian village. King Kamsa, having learned of a prophecy about a boy destined to bring an end to his rule, sent a succession of powerful demons to destroy him.
Each demon appeared in an unusual form and brought a new danger: a destructive whirlwind, a poisoned lake, a giant serpent, and other extraordinary trials. Six such characters appeared throughout the production.
But these demons were more than fairy-tale villains. Each one represented a human weakness or destructive quality, including greed, anger, envy, pride, and hatred.
By overcoming them, Krishna not only protected the people of his village, but also freed his opponents from the dark qualities that controlled them.
A story of transformation
In the final part of the story, Krishna confronted King Kamsa himself. After his defeat, Kamsa recognized the consequences of his actions and asked for forgiveness.
What began as a vivid adventure became a story about inner transformation, the triumph of good, and the possibility of change.
Today, this production remains part of Warm Wind Theatre’s history and reflects the artistic language, themes, and cultural inspiration that shaped the theatre from its earliest years.
